Towada may be known for horses, but as you venture into the mountains, you’ll hear the sounds of a different creature. Wild birds inhabit the lakes, rivers, and mountains around Towada and can be most easily spotted along Oirase Gorge and ponds that surround the Tsuta Bird Sanctuary.

What types of birds might you see in Towada and the surrounding nature areas? Ruddy kingfishers, mandarin ducks, grey herons, pygmy woodpeckers, whooper swans, and the mountain hawk-eagles, just to name a few.
